About Cyprus
The Breathtaking Island of Aphrodite
The beauty of the island of Cyprus, which is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Beauty, is
recorded in Greek Mythology by Homer in two of his books: "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey".
Apart from myths, the island also carries over 9,000 years of a truly rich and dramatic history. It is an
island that over the years has been dominated by various conquerors, some of whom included the
ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines and Franks. This was due to the fact that the island
of Cyprus was considered to have had a very advantageous geographic location as it is situated in the
eastern corner of the Mediterranean. Hence, it was a meeting place for people from the continents of
Asia, Africa and Europe. Mythology and history have left the island with an admirable legacy and
culture for visitors to observe.
Nicosia: A Multi-Ethnic Centre
Global College is located in the island's capital city of Nicosia with a population of
over 280,000. It is relatively small in comparison to other European cities, but life
here is never dull. Since it is the heart of Cyprus' educational, business and cultural
centres, it never disappoints. Its multiplicity undoubtedly caters for every taste from
the young to the old. On the one hand, the numerous markets, shopping centres,
restaurants, cinemas and sport facilities suggest an informal atmosphere; whilst on
the other hand the many libraries, art galleries, museums and theatres enhance
cultural perception.
Economy
Despite the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the division of the island into two sectors, the economy of the
Republic of Cyprus has thrived, especially during the 1980’s. Economists throughout the world have
considered this economic development as a miracle. Cyprus became a full member of the European
Union in 2004.
Tourism is the island’s largest revenue earner as Cyprus hosts’ approximately 2 million visitors per
year. Apart from tourism, the economy of this country enjoys a competitive advantage over other
counties in areas such as consultancy, shipping, banking, insurance, telecommunications and
education.
Climate and Landscape
The island of Cyprus is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean and is
within easy reach of the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. It is the third
largest island in the Mediterranean occupying an area of 3,572 sq. miles or 9,251
sq. km.
The island benefits from a superb Mediterranean climate. It experiences hot, dry
summers that commence in May and last until mid-October; and mild, wet
winters from November till about mid-February. The mean temperature during
summer is 35oC or 96oF and 8oC or 42oF in winter.
The countryside has an inexpressible beauty. The complex of mountain ranges,
especially the Troodos, have been truly blessed by mother nature and the golden,
sunny beaches give visitors the opportunity to enjoy both winter and summer
sports, which include skiing, mountain climbing and various marine/aquatic
activities such as fishing, diving, snorkeling and water skiing.
In addition to these activities, travellers have the option of either visiting the
cosmopolitan cities of Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca where they can
enjoy shopping, frequenting cafeterias and nightclubs, or just relaxing in one of
the many traditional rural villages, which exhale the Cypriot culture.
